Fences in Hideaway (Hide-A-Way Lake)
Hideaway is a gated city that shares its boundaries exactly with the Hide-A-Way Lake Club, which began selling lots on July 4, 1967, and incorporated in 2001. The club's building code, not a city office, decides what fence can go up. Lakefront fencing is limited to decorative wrought iron that stays at least 80 percent open.

The club handles management, including building permits under its Building Code, revised August 29, 2025. About 1,700 homes sit behind manned security gates, roughly 13 miles northwest of Tyler and north of I-20, reached off FM 16 west of Lindale. For fencing, that means the approval path runs through club committees rather than a city hall counter.
Not every lot faces a lake or a fairway. On interior lots the Building Code allows a fence up to six feet with a permit, and any fence within ten feet of a lot boundary needs one. No fence may stand within 25 feet of the edge of the pavement, which pushes a street-side fence well back from the road. The Property Stewardship Committee reviews these requests.
The 2025 revision added language letting the club restrict fences in front of the house for fences installed after September 1, 2025. The full effect of that rule on a given lot is not spelled out here. Anyone planning a fence forward of the house should read the current code and ask the committee first, and the business confirms it with the club before drawing the layout.
Across the three club lakes, 233 acres in all, and the 27-hole golf course, the code steers owners toward open designs. On the lots that border them, decorative wrought iron is the one line fence the code accepts. Open pickets keep the water and fairway views that the rules are written to protect, so a design that looks solid on paper will not get through review.
Sometimes the goal is a small enclosed area for a dog rather than a full perimeter. The code allows a pet-control fence reaching up to ten feet from the house, and pools must have barriers that meet Texas law. A short run with a self-closing gate off the back door can serve both needs on some lots. The community's neighbor to the east is Lindale, whose school district also serves Hideaway.
